I Didn't Realize My House Smelled Until My Friend Said Something

I kept my place spotless. Then a text after trivia night made me wonder what everyone else had been noticing the whole time.

I've been a foster pet parent since 2024 and homed multiple angels. Right now I have an 8 year old bulldog named Otis and a little 9 month old kitten named Cloud (I'm trying very hard not to fall in love with them). Now since I work from home I try to keep my house spotless, so I scoop the litter box every day, vacuum a few times a week and whenever I have some free time I make sure to give Otis a bath. Being older he has occasional accidents on the carpet, so I always keep some cleaner on hand for that. Even with all of that sometimes I'd catch a faint odor when I walked through my front door but it would always disappear a few hours later so I never paid too much attention to it.

My friends and I recently started doing trivia nights and it was my turn to host so I had a few people over, nothing fancy. After trivia ended the guys went out to light a cigar and my girlfriends and I stayed inside with some wine. One of my girlfriends got up to grab more wine and said, "Is it just me or does the carpet smell kind of strong?" I just laughed it off in the moment. After everyone left she texted me saying, "Not trying to be rude, but the smell of the living room carpet is pretty strong."

The text really caught me off guard because I had deep cleaned before everyone came over. Vacuumed, mopped, even opened the windows. So the fact that she could smell something I couldn't in my own home really got to me. After that night I started feeling embarrassed at the idea of having anyone over again.

Her text also had me thinking about that faint smell I'd notice every time I'd walk through my front door, so I started texting a few other foster pet parents and turns out your nose gets used to a smell that's always there and tunes it out, something called "nose blindness" the same way you stop hearing a fridge humming in the next room. Everyone else who walks in doesn't have that filter yet. That's the only reason it made sense that she could smell something I couldn't in my own home.

Everyone close to me knows I'm kind of a neat freak, so finding out from a friend that my house smelled drove me a little crazy... I started researching ways to fix it and that's when I came across a Reddit thread where people swore vinegar and baking soda would do the trick. In the same thread, someone had commented, "I wanna try this but how would I know it works if I can't even smell the odor to begin with?" and then a reply saying, "the only real way to judge results yourself is to leave the house for a few hours and walk back in fresh, since your nose resets once you've been away."

So I spent my entire Sunday at the beach then came back home and immediately started smelling the odor my friend had mentioned. Before even taking a shower I grabbed some vinegar and baking soda from my pantry and gave it a shot. It pretty much took my whole Sunday evening to go around my entire house. It helped for about a day then the smell came back stronger.

I went back to the same thread to figure out why it hadn't worked and I saw a comment saying "When pet pee dries, it leaves behind tiny crystals. Vinegar and most sprays can't break those crystals down. The spray just sits on top and sometimes the water in the spray even makes the smell worse." This was the first answer that actually made sense.

I wasn't cleaning wrong. I was fixing the wrong part of the problem.

At this point I was annoyed the vinegar hadn't worked but I wasn't ready to give up completely, and that's when I came across something called OdorLock on Facebook. The ad showed this small handheld device with a blue light mist nozzle and little attachable refill bottles. According to their site the product would reach deep into the fibers instead of just sitting on top like the vinegar and other sprays. I'd never heard or seen anything like this before, but it came with a money back guarantee, so worst case I could just get my money back. I was still a little skeptical since the Reddit remedy hadn't worked but at the same time I had nothing to lose so I ordered it that same night.

A few days in with OdorLock and I was using it everywhere… the litter box, my couch, the carpet, my car, even my gym bag... There just wasn't a smell there anymore (not even a strong perfume-y smell which I appreciate since my nose tends to be sensitive). I mentioned it to another girlfriend I know through fostering, who's been doing it since 2015, and she laughed and said she'd had one for months and that it worked not just on pet odor but on the smell of her husband's cigars as well.

I'd still get a little nervous before people came over the first week with OdorLock. But by week three I stopped thinking about it completely. No more candles around my entire house, no more steering people away from the couch. The same girlfriend from the trivia night came back a few weekends later and asked if I'd gotten new carpet. I hadn't and that's when I realized the smell wasn't just better. It was gone.

Maybe someone already said something to you. Or you're just now wondering if you've gone nose blind to your own house. I get it. I can't promise it will go exactly like this for you. But it comes with a money back guarantee. So you have a real chance to find out without much to lose.
